On this opening day of Autodesk University, we’re happy to announce some big news for 3ds Max users: an integration of Substance Source in 3ds Max and a brand-new redesign of the Substance plugin for 3ds Max that includes all-over better performance and user comfort, including 8K visuals and a new user interface.
SUBSTANCE SOURCE INTEGRATION IN 3DS MAX
Autodesk will be integrating Substance Source, our continually growing library of physically based materials, into 3ds Max. Now, users will be able to search Substance Source via Autodesk’s own 3ds Max Asset Libraryand select from more than 1,200 PBR materials explicitly designed for architecture, design, visual effects and game-related projects.
SUBSTANCE PLUGIN FOR 3DS MAX
This is actually a complete redesign of the Substance plugin that we’ve had for a few years, which makes authoring photorealistic materials in 3ds Max a lot easier now with better performance, 8K visuals and a brand-new user interface.
Used in combination with Substance Designer, the Substance plugin for 3ds Max gives users the ability to easily create physically based materials by opening and tweaking Substance files. Resolution rates have also been increased to 8K, providing users with enhanced visual quality when creating high-end renderings.
The Substance plugin runs on the latest version of Substance Engine and 3ds Max users will benefit from updates that arrive simultaneously with Substance Designer updates.

A productivity-friendly UI redesign makes this plugin easy and satisfying to use:
